Harvesting Crop Residue - Allan Vyhnalek Newscolumn Week of September 22, 2008
Harvesting crop residue has increased in recent years and demand for the product is likely to grow. Letting cattle graze corn stalks is a long-standing practice in many areas, but increased use of distillers grain in the diet of beef cattle is contributing to reduced feeding of alfalfa hay and corn silage and increased harvesting and feeding of crop residue. Harvesting crop residues for cellulosic ethanol production is anticipated in the near future. While corn stalk grazing usually results in little nutrient or organic material removal, mechanical harvests remove nutrients and organic material critical to maintaining soil productivity.

Wind Power -- What Land Owners Need to Know
The University of Nebraska- Lincoln Extension will be hosting educational workshops on wind power and land owners’ issues on October 6th and 7th 2008. October 6th Valentine, NE 6:00 to 10:00 pm Cherry County Courthouse meeting room. And again October 7th, Norfolk, NE at the Lifelong Learning Center from 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon.

Nebraska Youth Beef Leadership Symposium "Setting the Cornerposts for Tomorrow's Beef Industry" -- November 15-17, 2008
The sixth annual Nebraska Youth Beef Leadership Symposium will be held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Animal Science Complex.The symposium is designed to introduce youth to careers opportunities and current issues in the beef industry, as well as offer education and practice in the use of leadership skills. Six participants in the symposium will be awarded a $500 College of Agriculture and Natural Resources scholarship.

Outside Play Helps Children Learn & Grow
Play is an essential activity of children. Research shows that nature play provides opportunities for creativity, expression, social interaction and imagination and improves cognitive functioning, critical thinking and self-esteem. However, with television, computers, video games, organized activities and continuous fears of "stranger danger," kids spend most of their time indoors. Recent studies have linked an increase in childhood obesity, Attention Deficit Disorder symptoms and childhood depression to this phenomenon and shown that time in nature can actually relieve some of these symptoms.
